Recent research has uncovered a possible mechanism of the cause of allergic-like symptoms such as asthma, migraines, and sick building syndrome when a person is exposed to Volatile Organic Chemicals(VOC) such as hydrocarbons, perfumes, fertilizers, and cigarette smoke.  This mechanism is not based on an allergy model but on a stressed nervous system model.

In a previous blog entry, the protein Nerve Growth Factor(NGF) was discussed as an internally synthesized protein that causes the nervous system to proliferate hypersensitive nerve endings and causes sensory cells, when irritated, to produce an inflammatory chemical called Substance P.  Substance P causes increased pain, smooth muscle contractions, acute inflammation, induces mast cells to release histamine and modulates the production of antibodies associated with allergies.   NGF is also synthesizes when the autonomic nervous system is stressed.

The proposed mechanism of chemical sensitivity:

1)         Stress increases the production of NGF.

2)         NGF causes sensory nerves to proliferate and become hypersensitive.

3)         VOC cause autonomic system stress and attach to chemical irritant receptors on hypersensitive sensory nerves.

4)         Stimulated sensory nerves release Substance P causing inflammation, stress, and the release of histamine by mast cells.

This is the important part.  A chemical called Neutral Neuropeptidase(NEP) degrades Substance P.  When released, Substance P causes inflammation and allergy-like symptoms.  But when NEP is present, the quantity of Substance P decreases resulting in less inflammation and less stress.

In addition to Volatile Organic Chemicals irritating sensory nerves, VOC also suppresses NEP.  The suppression of NEP prolongs the life of Substance P and inflammation.  Allergy-like symptoms arise without involving antibodies.  Allergy-like symptoms appear due to a hypersensitive, stressed nervous system.

The BAX3000 works by reducing the stress and hypersensitivity of nerves when exposed to VOC.  The BAX3000 creates a positive association between VOC and stress-reducing endorphins.  The new association reduces stress and stops the following release of inflammatory chemicals.

For many of us, allergies are a chronic life-long condition in which relief is only found by taking expensive medications, enduring painful injections and years of doctor visits.  By some estimates, 60 million Americans suffer from allergies and millions more suffer from other chemical sensitivities.  Their symptoms can vary from hay fever, eczema, sinusitis, irritable bowel syndrome, celiac disease, dermatitis, and autism.  But conventional medicine does not explain why allergies and chemical sensitivities take hold and maintain their strength in our bodies.  Instead, conventional medicine focuses its attention on either quick allergy symptom reduction or long-term desensitization.  After several decades and billions of dollars spent on research, marketing, and care, neither method has reduced the incidence of allergy and chemical sensitivities.  In fact, the number of allergy sufferers keeps rising.

A new model of allergy causation and treatment is needed that expands the narrow accepted model of an allergy being an over-reaction of the immune system.  Stated simply, the body responds as though it’s under attack, releasing antibodies and triggering inflammation, even though the stimulus of the attack (the allergen) is normally harmless.  This immune system centered model ignores the other body systems(autonomic nervous system, circulatory system, digestive system, integumentary system(skin), excretory system, and different energy systems) and the body’s stress response.  The immune system centered model most importantly does not explain how a harmless allergen is imprinted by the body as being dangerous.

A newer expanded model of allergy and chemical sensitivity origination has the potential to open the door to newer therapies that not only reduce allergic symptoms, but may eliminate allergic and chemical sensitivity reactions.  This exciting field has many clinical possibilities that far exceed allergy reduction.

In future posts I will discuss newer theories of how a harmless allergen is imprinted as being dangerous, new technology that reprograms the body’s stress response when the body first detects an allergen, the components of stress response, stress and health, autonomic nervous system related conditions, complimentary health care, and the current health care debate at our nation’s capital.

The benefit of chiropractic lies in the improved movement and alignment of our spinal joints. Each joint contains two nerve endings of particular importance to chiropractic: proprioceptors and nociceptors. If our movement patterns and posture are normal then these nerves fire normally and chiropractic is not needed. But if our movement patterns and posture are not normal then chiropractic is of great health building benefit.

Proprioceptors – These nerve ending measure motion and posture. They reside in joints, muscle, tendons, and ligaments of our spine and send movement and posture information to our brain. The spinal cord is comprised of over 50% proprioceptor originating nerves.

This massive amount of information fuels and energizes our brain. Our brain depends on this continuous stream of information to coordinate complex processing.

If any portion of our spine is misaligned and stiff, the proprioceptors will not be stimulated to produce continuous stream of information to our brain. This has dangerous repercussions that cause a decrease coordination of:
- movement
- thought/memory
- learning
- emotion
- viscera(internal organ) function
- pain reduction
- stress response reduction.

This leads to decrease body function and disease.

Nociceptors – are often called pain receptors. They transmit potential pain signals to our brain.

If any portion of our spine is misaligned and stiff, the nociceptors send a barrage of information to our brain causing our brain to launch a potentially chronic stress fight or flight response. Our brain senses danger.

The chronic stress response is blamed as the origin of most of disease and all chronic disease. This chronic stress response causes:
- increased cortisol
- increased heart rate
- increased blood pressure
- increased blood glucose levels
- increased blood lipid levels
- increased cholesterol levels
- increased clotting factors
- increased protein degradation of muscle
- insulin resistance
- decreased short term memory, ability to concentrate, and learn new material
- increased feeling of stress, fear, anxiety and depression
- decreased serotonin levels
- increase pain
- decreased immunity
- bone loss
- decreased R.E.M. sleep
- decreased growth and testosterone hormone
- increased inflammation
- decrease digestion
- decrease sex drive
- muscle tightness
- postural deformity

Chiropractic’s role in health
A healthy moving spine yields normal proprioceptor and nociceptor output to our brain.

This output decreases our stress response, improves coordination of all body functions, and insures that nerve communications are unimpeded.

A normal functioning spine serves as a solid foundation from which all healthy lifestyle activities can lead to a healthier vital you.

What is our body’s stress response?
Our body’s stress response is an ancient, proven set of actions that protect our body in times of actual or perceived danger and strenuous activity. The stress response automatically protects from short term danger. This served us well for thousands of years during times of famine and attack by predators.

What is the inherent danger of our stress response?
Our body’s chronic stress response is the same even though it is not appropriate to our current urban lifestyle. Research shows that it is a major cause of heart disease, cancer, stroke, pain, premature aging, and depression.

What are some of the stress response bodily actions?
· Lower immune response
· Change of posture
· Increased blood pressure
· Increased pulse rate
· Increased blood sugar levels
· Decrease insulin sensitivity
· Increase level of inflammation
· Increased cholesterol levels
· Increased level of inflammation
· Increased blood thickness
· Reduced sexual drive
· Reduced digestion
· Increase levels of pain
· Decreased ability to think clearly
· Decreased ability to sleep
· Increased level of alertness/ nervousness/ fidgeting
· Increased allergies

These symptoms cause illness and chronic diseases. They are preventable.

What causes the stress response in today’s modern world?
Not moving, eating, and thinking properly.

What can I do to limit my stress response?
The stress response is normal and beneficial in times of acute danger. The problem is that we automatically respond more forcefully and frequently then is appropriate to our current urban life. The solution is to consciously take control with how we move, eat, and think so that it is in accordance with what our body requires. We must do the following.

Eat Well
Sufficient calories and nutrients.
Limited junk food and other toxins.
Move Well
Sufficient alignment and flexibility, strength and endurance exercise.
Limited toxic movement
Think Well
Sufficient positive thoughts, affirmations and “living in present”
Limited toxic thoughts and repetitive, useless thinking
Live Well
Sufficient hygienic habits.
Limited toxic habits and relationships.

By eating, moving, and thinking well, we limit the catabolic stress response and move toward homeostasis – the state of balance and harmony which allows full growth and repair, instead of the stress and survival state leading to illness and death.

It is up to us, whether or not we choose health over sickness.
